Membership Spotlight: Donnie McLaughlin, FACHE

Please tell us a little about your background and what inspired you to pursue a career in healthcare:

I started my career as a clinician in East Texas.  After several years of clinical care, I spent almost a decade as a device sales rep.  At UTSW I finished my career as the AVP, Hospital Clinical Operations: covering all non-clinical and clinical ancillary services.  I’ve been at CHI – Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center for almost 2 years as the leader of Operations.  I had a family event when I was younger that pulled me into the medical field due to a sickness my uncle suffered from.  It drove me to always want to improve care and drive best practices at any place I have been.

What activities do you like to do in your free time?

I have two beautiful daughters 16 and 14 years old who are extremely active in equestrian sports.  My wife of 20+ years is also a practicing doctor of traditional naturopathy.  Most of my time is spent with as much family time as possible, being able to contribute to our ranch in East Houston and horseback riding.

What is your favorite ACHE memory or activity?

In my previous chapter, we had a gathering where I was able to connect with several leaders.  One of the leaders I connected with has become my mentor over the years.  He is incredibly invaluable and I would not be in my current position without him.  ACHE has had a concrete impact on my career path over the years due to this and the education that we can provide.

How do you envision healthcare in the next 10 years?

I see healthcare becoming significantly more personalized, and accessible through technology like telemedicine, with a strong focus on preventative care.  I love to see the approach to multidisciplinary care that is focused on quality and patient experience.
